3 ways to Look out for your Digestive Health Over the Holidays

As the “modified” holiday celebrations continue, you may be wondering how you can help stay on top of your health goals and continue to support your gut.

Read below for a few tips to avoid being a Grinch to your gut this holiday.

1. Eat with intention

Eat with gratitude and intention as you embark on this holiday season. This is my ultimate tip to avoid the feelings of regret over indulgence. Resist taking an “all –or-nothing” mentality when it comes to your food choices. Make purposeful decisions when eating foods you maybe wouldn’t normally choose. For example, if you typically avoid gluten or sugar, you may not feel well if you eat a large amount of them – but that doesn’t mean you to have avoid them completely. Make an effort to enjoy the foods made and served with love by your family and friends and try not to let the pesky feelings of shame or guilt creep in. It is much worse for your body to stress the small stuff then to avoid the food all together.

2. Keep Moving

Resist the strong desire to take a nap and veg out after a big meal. Get your body moving. Movement helps to stimulate the digestive process.  Physical activity increase blood flow to the muscles in the digest system. It helps signal the digestive process. A gentle walk or stretch can help to get your body moving and stimulate our digestive tract to be breaking down food.

3. Detox

After a day of redox consider detox.

  1. Begin your day with warm lemon water and sip it throughout the day.   Lemons provide several health benefits, which combined with warm water, can promote hydration and stimulate digestion throughout the day.
  2. Focus on vegetable and fibre intake. Think fruits, veggies, and plant-based proteins. The increased fibre content will help you detox by increasing antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes in your liver. They also will promotes healthy gut microbiome that can protect your gut from inflammatory foods eaten in the days before.
  3. Consider an infra red sauana. Because infrared lights work by penetrating your body deeper than the outer layer of your skin, the heat can affect your organs and begin pulling out toxins deep beneath.

I hope that these tips help keep your health goals and gut in check this holiday.
